Grind Time Now’s founder Drect has put out an article, running down his list of the ten best rounds in battle rap history. Drect includes the battles referenced, a transciption of the rounds, and even breaks down how many punches and “bombs” they had. The battles span the history of battling, from the freestyle era to the Smack DVD era. From the Fight Klub to Grind Time Now. Whether or not you agree with everything on the list, it’s worth taking a look just to compare to your own. You have to respect the man’s opinion, based on his legacy in the battle rap culture. Drect also lists off his honorable mentions, rounding out his 50 greatest rounds in battle rap history. It’s definitely an interesting read, and worth taking a look at. I’ve included an excerpt from the introduction below, but you should definitely check out the article for yourself, and you can do so by clicking here.
I have decided to devise a list of some of the best verses in battle rap history. As the first part of “top ten” series I will be writing on this blog. Please keep in mind this is not just a list of very good verses, but THE BEST in the history of battling. The requirements for this list include: delivery, writing skills, live crowd reaction, number of “bombs,” impact the verse had in battle rap/hip hop at the time it came out and what it did for the artists’ career.I would not dare try to put these verses in order, as they all came at a unique time and had a different impact on different groups of fans. 2 vs 2s, freestyle battles, and some battlers/performances will not appear on this list due to the fact that they are better suited for another blog in my series. – Drect
